Bhowanipore: The department of posts has launched a track-and-trace service for registered international post to select countries in the Asia Pacific region.
The announcement of the launch of the service - International Tracked Packet - was made on October 9, to mark the beginning of the National Postal Week, which continued till October 15.
Henceforth, registered mail to 12 countries can be tracked using the booking identification number of the consignment on www.indiapost.gov.in. The 12 countries are Japan, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
"So long, the tracking facility was available only for international speed post. For registered post, the facility was confined to domestic mail. Now, we are extending end-to-end tracking for registered post delivery to these countries. We are starting with these countries as we are already cooperating with them on various fronts for reciprocal services," said chief post master general, West Bengal circle, Arundhaty Ghosh.
The service was launched by Ghosh at the Bhowanipore sub-post office last week in the presence of postmaster general, Calcutta, J. Charukesi.
No extra charges are being levied for the tracking facility. "We are creating a new market for people who need accountability but cannot afford a hefty payment and are not in a great hurry," Ghosh added.
Currently the first 100g cost Rs 310-330, depending on the country chosen, with another Rs 25-45 for every additional 100g or part.
"The product is specially designed for e-commerce for cross-border transactions but individuals can use it as well," said Charukesi.
For bulk bookings, a free pick-up facility will be offered.
