Calcutta, Jan. 30: Three days before handing over charge, police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha today raised several questions on crime against women and the thriving drug menace in the city.
Addressing his last crime conference as the city's top cop, Kar Purkayastha asked his men to curb incidents of road rage, control speeding bikers, ensure smooth traffic for Madhyamik examinees and remain alert during election season.
An officer said today's meeting was unlike past crime conferences where murder, robbery and dacoity are discussed in detail.
Many officers-in-charge, assistant commissioners and IPS officers said today's "unusual" conference left them "surprised".
An officer said last month's seven murders were briefly discussed before going into details about the steps taken by cops to end the drug menace.
"He (Kar Purkayastha) related a murder at Tiljala last month to drug abuse and asked an officer supervising the narcotics wing why no action has been taken," he said. "The officer told the commissioner that the drug peddler had not been arrested since he was a witness in the case."
Kar Purkayastha also enquired about a kidnapping case, which was originally lodged with Hauz Khas police station in Delhi. The case was later transferred to East Jadavpur police station. He ended the meeting saying: "Honesty and integrity are always valued."
"He started coughing while saying these lines... he got emotional," said an inspector.
Kar Purkayastha's three-year term as the top cop was marked by incidents of assaults on cops. But these were not discussed in today's meeting, an officer said.
