Durga, the vanquisher of the buffalo-demon, was represented in the art of India as early as the classical period. In the ongoing exhibition, terracotta plaque, wood carvings, manuscripts, illustrated manuscript covers, paintings like chalachitra, scrolls, Kalighat, sara or painted earthen lids, dokra work, clay objects, masks, kantha and similar traditional objects are used to represent the divergent aspects of the goddess’ benign and aggressive moods. The exhibits range in date from the 10th century to the present.

COMPETITION

Till January 31 at British Council: International writing competition in association with Sampad invites entries in the form of poetry, short stories or reportage on the theme of ‘Inspired by Tagore’.
