Pancham 70 One of the greatest music composers of Bollywood, R.D. Burman (lovingly called Pancham by his numerous friends and admirers) is credited with revolutionising Hindi film music, ushering in the era of electronic rock and providing it with a whole new ‘happening’ sound. To celebrate the legendary music director’s 70th birth anniversary, Amit Kumar Fan Club hosts Revival of Pancham, a programme of tribute and nostalgia through R.D.’s own compositions. Along with personal reminiscences by singers and musicians who were part of his group, it will feature performances by Manohari Singh, Bhanu Gupta, Indrani Sen, Soumitra Chatterjee, Rocket Mandal and music researcher Vishwas Nerurkar. It also includes rare video clips and pictures of R.D.’s song recordings, sitting-room sessions and various stage-show moments, along with his interviews and a few unreleased songs. Saxophonist Manohari Singh and harmonica-player/guitarist Bhanu Gupta will be felicitated. Gulzar’s book Qatrah Qatrah on Pancham-Gulzar works, Ek Shurooat, an audio-CD of R.D.-Kishore songs by Amit Kumar, and RDXlusive, an audio mp3 on two of R.D.’s songs in the same tune (by Saregama HMV) will be released. On Sunday (June 29) Euphony presents An Evening with Pancham, featuring R.D.’s original guitar gang (Sunil Kaushik, Bhanu Gupta, Ramesh Iyer) and Homi Mullal (percussion), with Manohari Singh as special guest.
