A natural inclination Gopal Ghose (1913-1980) is regarded as one of the best landscape painters in Indian art. His early years were spent in Simla and this is where his obsession with spaces, colours, textures and forms of nature took shape. To this love was added a patriotic flavour when he met Gandhi and Nehru in his youth. All his works have a brilliance that could be rendered by one who could observe beauty in nature. The spirituality follows: what strikes is the sheer sensuousness of the artist’s appreciation. His works, both watercolours and pastels, have a distinct appeal, different from any post-modernist landscape or impressionistic painting. His paintings evoke village scenes, hill-side views, forest edges, woodland locales, tree-scapes (one of these, Palmgrove, appears right), bushes and shrubberies, ocassionally with women-figures shaped out of masterful, brisk strokes.
