Munich-born, London-based photographer Emil Otto Hoppé was considered the “most famous photographer in the world in the 1920s”. Invited by Tagore, he visited Santiniketan in 1929, where he captured perhaps some of the most candid yet characteristic images of Tagore in his abode of peace. Hosted by Victoria Memorial Hall, Calcutta and The Marg Foundation, Mumbai, Hoppé’s Santiniketan, the ongoing show, features a collection of these works. Though Tagore’s aura remains unescapable in his portraits, the Poet appears in a remarkably different persona from those of him taken by Hoppé earlier in London. In these frames, Tagore is the benign centre of a rustic community of eager students and enterprising craftsmen. The images, in fact, underline the photographer’s response to Santiniketan; as a place where energy and beauty go hand-in-hand with austerity. Besides, Hoppé’s love for the tranquil beauty of the Bengal countryside is also expressed with great charm and delicacy.

Event: An exhibition of photographs on Santiniketan by Emil Otto Hoppé When: Till May 30 (except Monday and holidays); 10am - 5pm Where: Portrait Gallery, Victoria Memorial Hall
