Spirit of caring Founded in 1979, Calcutta Rescue is a private organisation that provides healthcare, education and development services to the socially and economically underprivileged in Calcutta and rural West Bengal. Its concern for the poor and needy covers a wide range of services that are given to over 100,000 people every year, irrespective of gender, age, caste or religion. Its medical services include urban, rural and mobile clinics, an outreach and street medicine programme and comprehensive treatment for HIV/AIDS. The institution also runs two schools, educating over 500 children, with vocational training for former patients and students, a Fair Trade certified handicrafts workshop and a rural clean-drinking-water programme. The ongoing exhibition of photographs by Donna Todd showcases moving portraits of Calcutta Rescue’s patients. A portrait photographer based in Melbourne, Todd’s work explores the human condition in challenging and difficult situations. Her photographs documenting the work of Calcutta Rescue capture the essence of the Rescue’s mission in a simple but moving way — a photographic narrative of those living in poverty in a large city with little social or government support.
