The recent works of Joydip Sengupta are witty, lively and imaginative. The artist captures the subtle irony of historicity, myth and the recognisable icon. Dialectica, his ongoing show, finds Sengupta exhibiting technical mastery over his medium. An obsessive attention to detail and craftsmanship, coupled with his irreverent treatment of familiar subjects, distances him from the trite. Yet, his works are visual carnivals: festive and delightful for those who share his sensibilities. His works clearly have a certain presence. They combine idolatry with iconoclasm and fetishism with purpose.
