Strings and lyrics
The Calcutta Chamber Orchestra was formed with the purpose of providing a sense of direction, belonging, employment and achievement to a group of boys who were brought up at the Oxford Mission. Over the years, other musicians have joined and been given constant training and exposure to conductors from all over the world. The varied repertoire of the Orchestra comprises Western classical music, Broadway melodies, Tagore songs and popular music, both Western and Indian. This evening, a string quartet of the Orchestra featuring Subroto Pramanick (leader and first violinist), Pronoti Prokash Mandal (second violin), Bhaskar Haldar (viola) and Somnath Makhal (cello) will perform (7 pm - 7.40 pm) as part of the third edition of Sound Comes to Life, a music programme hosted by Sonodyne, along with Starmark and LITTLEi. Open Stage (7.40 pm - 8 pm) offers an opportunity for aspiring music performers to showcase their talent. A live show by the Yatakas (picture along; 8 pm - 9 pm), a city-based music band, will bring the evening to a close. Inspired by nuances of Indian music, blended with elements of progressive rock, the group’s Hindi songs are essentially new age. They will sing a mix of original compositions, as well as popular Hindi and English numbers by other bands.
