Death, angst and Deutschland

The Telegraph Online Published 11.05.11, 12:00 AM
Death, angst and Deutschland
Alexander Kluge, writer and filmmaker, academic and sometime lawyer, is one of Germany’s most important intellectual figures. A founding father of what is now known as New German Cinema, Kluge was one of the signatories to the Oberhausen Manifesto. He has been one of modern Germany’s most uncompromising (and most politically challenging) filmmakers. This series of screenings, hosted by Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, is a tribute to this iconic filmmaker. To be screened today is Deutschland im Herbst (Germany in Autumn; 119 min, 1978). It is a collective film by German filmmakers contributing their reportage, political statements and artistic comments on the political situation in Germany after the kidnapping of industrialist Hanns Martin Schleyer. Different directors divide the film, an omnibus project from the start, into several segments without titles. The directors responsible for filming the segments were Heinrich Böll, Hans Peter Cloos, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Alexander Kluge, Maxmiliane Mainka, Edgar Reitz, Katja Rupé, Volker Schlöndorff, Peter Schubert and Bernhard Sinkel. Kluge and Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus edited the film and were responsible for the film’s large-scale montage. The film juxtaposes differing narrative styles in order to confront audiences with Germany’s crises that stemmed from contemporary terrorism and the weight of history. To be screened on May 12: Die Patriotin (The Patriot; 118 min, 1979) and May 14: Der grobe Verhau (The Big Mess; 90 min, 1971).

Event: A collection of German feature films in tribute to Alexander Kluge When: Till May 14 (except May 13); 6.30pm Where: Max Mueller Bhavan
