Cinema on human rights
Conceived in 2002 by a group of Latin American filmmakers, Tri Continental Film Festival is an initiative that uses the medium of film to explore linkages between social struggles and respect for human rights. To be inaugurated this afternoon by Mrinal Sen and Justice Shyamal Sen, the 4th Tri Continental Film Festival, being held in Calcutta, besides three other Indian cities, features 13 films on newer themes like migration, natural disasters, justice in post-conflict societies, juvenile delinquency and relationships between neighbouring countries, to name a few. To be screened today: Pirinop, My First Contact (picture left; 4 pm), The Women’s Kingdom (5.30 pm), Its Always Late for Freedom (6 pm) and 1000 Days and a Dream (7.30 pm). Hosted by Breakthrough and Swayam.

February 8 - 10 at Padatik’s Buildwell Theatre, 6/7 AJC Bose Road; 6.30 pm: Padatik will stage its latest production, Lahron Ke Rajhans (Hindi), by Mohan Rakesh. Direction: Shyamanand Jalan. February 8 at Tollygunge Club; 7.15 pm: Seagram 100 Pipers, Kingfisher Airlines and Fame and Open Doors present Wilde at Heart by de Musset & Co (London). A dramatic celebration of the life, loves and times of Oscar Wilde by popular stage, screen and television actors Patrick Marley and Genevieve Allenbury.

PERFORMING ARTS

February 8 at Kala Mandir; 6 pm: Euphony, a group of Rahul Dev Burman fans who met on the internet, presents a musical evening, Tribute to Panchamda. Participants include (from original Pancham, Mumbai) Ramesh Iyer (rhythm guitar), Bhanu Gupta (Spanish guitar), Kishore Sodha (trumpet), Blasco (trombone), Shyamraj (tennor sax), Ranjit Ghazmer (madal), Homi Mullal (duggi, resso resso and others) and Kersi Lord (keyboard) along with Calcutta musicians Rocket Mondal & troupe. The entire orchestra will be arranged by Ramesh Iyer. February 8 at Inox City Centre; 6 pm - 8 pm: Performance by Krosswindz at Inox Unplugged. February 8 at Calcutta School of Music; 7 pm: Calcutta School of Music presents the concert of the Galatea String Quartet. Organised under the auspices of the One Ocean series and is part of the celebrations of 60 years of the Indo-Swiss Friendship Treaty. February 9 & 10 at G.D. Birla Sabhagar; 5.30 pm: Swarganga presents Banaras Utsav, a festival of classical music. Feb. 9: Inauguration by Pandit Kishan Maharaj; vocal recital by Purnima Choudhuri with Ananda Gopal Bandyopadhyay (tabla) and Ramesh Mishra (sarangi); and vocals by Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra with Samar Saha (tabla) and Jyoti Goho (harmonium).
