Oriental rock

The Telegraph Online Published 05.04.11, 12:00 AM
Oriental rock
Since its birth in 1998, the adventure of French rock group Les Boukakes has been shared with around 20 musicians and singers from all over the Mediterranean. The group creates its original sound with a mix of ethnic and cultural influences: stirring rock, groove, electronic, raï and gnawa, all in one melting pot. The band re-establishes that music can transcend borders. Les Boukakes’ name itself is a reply to some of the less-than-friendly comments they received in their time on the streets, ‘Boukake’ being a phonetic mixture of two typically racist insults. Without making ostensible political comments in their songs, their deliberate attitude makes a statement about their resistance to bias and ignorance in general. Making a name for itself for the first time in 2004, Les Boukakes has, since then, performed at various music festivals across the globe as well as been on tour to present its music to live audiences. This evening, Alliance Française du Bengale presents the band live in concert, for the first time in the city.

Event: Live concert by Les Boukakes When: Today at 8pm Where: Hyatt Regency
