Eastern expressions
As part of its centenary celebrations, Tata Steel hosted an art camp in Jamshedpur with artists from Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand. Art and Industry, the ongoing exhibition, features their works in an attempt to capture a unique part of the east Indian artistic experience. Wide in range of practice, some of the works on show are inspired and informed by nature, while others depict everyday events, people and places. Some are prophetic in tone, while others emphasise the human side of life in this part of the country. Animal, real and imaginary, are popular subjects. Expressing their vision through paint, metal, fibreglass and other mediums to fashion a world that is both fantastic and familiar, the artists speak of the joy and freedom they find in creation as well as of the compulsion to express themselves. Approaching their art with an intoxicating abandon and awe-inspiring devotion, their works, besides being a celebration of the art of eastern India, help understand the story of a land and its artists. Participants include: Kamal Mitra and Partha Pratim Deb (West Bengal), Shyam Sharma and Milan Das (Bihar), Shashikant Sahoo (a painting by him appears here) and Manas Jena (Orissa), Badal Pramanik and Niranjan Pradhan (Jharkhand).

Event: An exhibition of paintings and sculptures by artists of eastern India When: Till July 7 (except Sunday); 11 am - 7 pm Where: Gallery K2, 35 Lansdowne Terrace
