Three of family killed in highway collision, child hurt

The vehicle rammed into a stationary truck on NH6

Three members of a family were killed when their vehicle rammed into a stationary truck on NH6 near the Debra toll plaza in East Midnapore’s Kharagpur on Saturday morning.

Sources said Samit Samanta, 40, an engineer from Midnapore, his wife Barnali, 35, and daughters Sinjini and Sammi, 11 and 6, respectively, were returning from Calcutta to Midnapore when the accident occurred. “Samit lost control of the car and rammed it into the truck. Samit and Barnali died on the spot. Daughter Sinjini succumbed to injuries at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, Sammi is admitted to the hospital as of Saturday night,” said a source.

Five injured

Five persons were seriously injured in a collision between a bus and a health department SUV at Sabang in West Midnapore on Saturday afternoon.

Sources said in the car were two medical officers — Dr. Arpita Maiti Jana and Dr. Sumitra Das — and two health workers — Malay Maiti and Ananta Pandit. The rural hospital staff and the SUV driver Babu Khan were seriously injured.

They have been admitted to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital.

Manas Ranjan Bhuiyan, MLA of Sabang and minister for consumer protection, said, “Every effort is being made by the state government to treat the injured doctors and health workers.”
