According to a villager, while going to the centre, the children picked up the explosive from the bank of a pond adjoining the ICDS.

Mistaking the explosive for a ball, the children were walking with it to the centre. Accidentally, the "ball" dropped from one of their hands and it went off, injuring the trio.

They were admitted to the Jangipur Subdivisional Hospital. The victims are Mahamuda Khatun, 8, Wasim Akhtar, 8, and Yedana Pervin, 6.

The doctors said the children suffered injuries to the limbs and abdominal region. But they are out of danger.

Madhumita Das, a worker in the ICDS in Housenagar, said: "Besides the children’s optimum mental and physical development, their safety is also our concern. Such an incident has shaken us."

Jangipur police district chief Ananda Roy said the law enforcers were investigating the incident.
