Besu will get a new vice-chancellor this week. The term of the present vice-chancellor, N.R. Banerjea, ends on February 28. The three candidates shortlisted by the state — Swapan Bhattacharya, the director of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, Bharghav Bikram Bhattacharya, the deputy director of the Indian Statistical Institute, and Ajay Ray, a teacher at IIT Kharagpur — met governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Monday. The new vice-chancellor will be selected on the basis of the governor’s recommendation.The carcass of a nine-foot Gangetic dolphin was found near the Kidderpore docks on Monday morning. A post-mortem revealed the mammal was pregnant and had suffered a haemorrhage, possibly after being hit by a ship’s propeller, the forest department said. The foetus will be preserved by the department.State chief secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti on Monday met top cops and senior civic officials to discuss traffic reorganisation near two heritage spots — the Maidan and BBD Square. It was decided that a four-member committee would be formed to look into traffic rejig plans and other matters. The committee would also consult the army as it is the custodian of the Maidan. The next meeting will be in March.A homeguard of Calcutta police died on Monday morning after falling off the footboard of a bus on route 1. Chittaranjan Garai, 51, was on his way to work at Kalighat Metro station. Garai was run over by the rear wheels of the bus. The driver has been arrested. On SP Mukherjee Road, Pancha Chetri, in his 40s, was killed when a bus on route 3C/1 dashed him. The driver fled.Abdul Rashid, 52, jumped in front of a Tollygunge-bound Metro train at Shyambazar station at 7.30pm on Monday. Police said he was alive when he was rescued from under the wheels but died on the way to RG Kar hospital. Metro services were disrupted for 35 minutes.
