Newborn in vat

The body of a newborn girl was found wrapped in polythene inside a garbage vat on KK Road in Thakurpukur on Friday morning. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Xavier’s

Father Felix Raj will take over as the principal of St Xavier’s College, Calcutta, on February 2. Present principal Father P.C. Mathew will become the director of the second campus of the college and the proposed research centre. Father Dominic Savio will take over as vice-principal of the commerce department and Father Jimmy Keepuram as vice-principal of the arts and science departments. Professor Albert Gomes will become the controller of examinations.

Bag at airport

An abandoned bag was spotted by CISF personnel in the international terminal of the city airport on Friday afternoon. The bomb squad found microchips and electronic goods worth Rs 4 lakh in the bag. A further scan revealed the adapters were filled with a white powder. The goods were handed over to the Customs authorities. CISF officers said the powder would be sent for forensic tests.

Sleaze racket

Five girls — all in their early twenties — were arrested on Friday evening in a Baguiati apartment for allegedly being involved in a sleaze racket. Police said the kingpin escaped.

Fire

A fire broke out in a room of the Baruipur civil court on Friday. morning. Fire officers said a short-circuit may have caused the fire. No one was injured.

CISF jawan P. Kariappa handed over an envelope containing Rs 50,000, which he had found in the domestic terminal of the Calcutta airport, to the airport manager on Friday morning.
