Two teenagers drowned in the Hooghly over the past two days, one in Barrackpore and the other in Shalimar.
Rahul Gon, 17, drowned while bathing in Barrackpore’s Mangal Pandey ghat with three of his classmates on Saturday afternoon. Rahul’s family lodged a police complaint alleging foul play but did not name his friends.
“The boy’s father, Rajesh, suspects the friends had a hand in Rahul’s death but did not name them in the complaint. We will question the friends,” said an officer of Barrackpore police station, where an unnatural death case has been registered.
The Class XI student and his friends went to Mangal Pandey ghat for a dip after school on Saturday afternoon.
The friends returned home and told Rahul’s parents that they could not trace him. Later, a boatmen spotted the body floating in water.
The police took the body to the local BN Bose Hospital, where Rahul was declared dead on arrival. An officer said a high tide was on when the boys entered the water. “Rahul could not swim and was probably swept away by the tide and then got stuck in the mud,” said an officer.
Nikhil Roy, 13, drowned while bathing in the Hooghly, in Shalimar, with some of his friends on Sunday morning. The group went for a dip after playing cricket in the afternoon.
The Class V student was standing on the concrete bank when he lost his balance and fell into the water, his friends said. Local residents fished out the body after around three hours.
