Balurghat, Sept. 30: The RSP student wing Progressive Students’ Union (PSU) has called a strike in educational institutions in town tomorrow to protest against assault on one of their supporters by alleged SFI activists today.
The SFI town secretary, Balai Roy, allegedly attacked the house of Debasish Chowdhury — a student of Balurghat College and a PSU supporter — this morning along with 50 SFI members armed with sticks, chains and stones.
Debasish, who suffered head injuries, had to be taken to the Balurghat district hospital where two stitches were administered on his head. His father has lodged a written complaint with the Balurghat police station against the SFI supporters. Inspector-in-charge Dharmadas Chatterjee said an inquiry had started.
Trouble had started on Saturday during a programme organised to welcome the freshers.
District secretariat member of the SFI and CPM councillor of Balurghat Municipality Arijit Chanda, however, denied the allegations.
Around 7pm today Utsab Mohanto, a second year science student at the college and an SFI supporter, was attacked allegedly by PSU members in front of their office on Kutchery Road. Three PSU supporters were injured in the clashes that followed.
