Jalpaiguri, Oct. 25: More than 1,300 trained volunteers of Sashatra Seema Bal (SSB) today demanded that SSB platoons be reinstalled along the border in the region.
With the para-military agency withdrawing their force from north Bengal and Sikkim, the volunteers are in jeopardy, essentially a moral one. In case they receive any information on cross-border infiltration or related activities, they would not have anybody to report to. Such were the concerns that SSB volunteers voiced during a convention held at Rabindra Bhawan here. ?We used to provide intelligence inputs about political situation, infiltration, terrorism and anti-national activities. But with the sudden withdrawal of the forces, we have no one to convey our information to,? said Subodh Chandra Roy, president of the central committee of SSB Volunteers? Association, north Bengal and Sikkim division.
?We plan to meet the Prime Minister soon. The volunteers should be given priority during SSB recruitment. A monthly allowance for senior members should also be started,? the secretary said.
