Gangtok, May 30: Heavy showers early in the morning today triggered flash floods and numerous landslips in various parts across the capital.
By evening, reports of similar landslips and flash floods poured in from other parts of the state.
In Lumsey, near 5th Mile, a suburb of Gangtok, a house was partially damaged by debris from a landslip. While the people were woken up by the noise of the landslide, no casualties were reported.
Flash floods also forced a jhora (stream) near the forest check post just above Ranipul to change its course, posing danger to the house of the local panchayat office.
The house was partially damaged. Further rains could cause more danger to the house.
Small landslips also occurred near Palzor Namgyal Girls? School and Shyari, a locality below Deorali in Gangtok. However, no roads were affected with the small slips causing no disturbances to traffic.
Luing, a small hamlet in east Sikkim, also witnessed a landslide.
Residents feared that further rains could cause damage to their property. Civil defence personnel had to be pressed into service in the morning after the heavy showers . However, no emergency situation arose.
The weather, thankfully, changed for the better later in the day.
