July 19: Calcutta University senate today named Himadri Banerjee, former Guru Nanak Professor of Indian History at Jadavpur University, as its nominee for the search panel that will shortlist candidates for the post of vice-chancellor.

"The higher education department has been informed about the selection," the university's interim registrar Rajagopal Dhar Chakraborty said.

At a senate meeting today, two members proposed the name of Ajit Kumar Mohanty, the director of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, as the university's nominee. "But they could not produce Mohanty's CV. On the other hand, those who proposed Banerjee's name had come armed with his CV. So, Banerjee was selected," an official said.

The other two members of the three-member search panel are Dipak Ranjan Mandal, VC of Sidho-Kanho-Birsa University, and Nimai Chandra Saha, VC of Burdwan University. Mandal is the chancellor's nominee, while Saha represents the government.
