Ballygunge Shiksha Sadan has been renamed The BSS School. The 62-year-old institution unveiled its new name and logo at a programme in the school auditorium on Thursday.

The new name reflects the school’s progressive outlook, principal Sunita Sen said. “Our school started off as a Hindi-medium institution. Though the medium of instruction changed to English in 1980, the name remained the same. But it gave rise to a lot of confusion about the quality of teaching. That we provide world-class education in state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories was lost to the world. So we decided to change our brand image and adopt a new name.”

According to the teachers and students, “BSS” has been the more popular name for the school for years. “We are trying to compete in the global market. Our school conducts exchange programmes with institutions in other countries. So we have to adopt a smarter image, in keeping with the global requirements,” said Sen.

Over the years, the school has become air-conditioned with “smart classes”, an English language lab, a math lab and a “school cinema” for life skills and English language communication training.

The new logo, in blue and grey, bears the school’s name in bold letters, an image of a tree and the school’s motto – “Commitment to Excellence”.
