Dibrugarh, July 17: A leader of the pro-talks group of Ulfa said henceforth they would not hold back any member after two more cadres deserted the camp, apparently frustrated over stalled negotiations.
Speaking to The Telegraph after an internal discussion, one of the leaders, Jiten Dutta, warned that the peace prevailing in Upper Assam for the past year may be ripped apart as more such desertion could strengthen Ulfa once again in the region.
“The cadres who had come out of the jungles wanted to see a final solution, not just sit around and get two square meals at designated camps,” Dutta said.
Two cadres, who were staying at the Kakopathar designated camp, Akon Moran and Biplob Baruah, fled on Wednesday night.
More importantly, the two have taken along with them four sophisticated weapons, including two Universal Machine Guns and two AK-47 rifles.
“The four weapons together carry a lot of lethal striking power,” a senior police official said, indicating the dangers these can pose.
There were 165 cadres left in the four designated camps at Kakopathar, Tinsukia, Moran and Nalbari after previous desertions. The strength is now 163 after the duo fled.
