RSP sets terms for election alliance

Alipurduar, Feb. 23: Stepping up its anti-CPM tirade, the RSP has set conditions for continuing its alliance with the ruling party in the upcoming panchayat elections.

Inaugurating the two-day state conference of the All-India Progressive Students’ Union, the party’s students wing, here yesterday, former PWD minister Kshiti Goswami, a senior RSP leader, said the party would “go it alone” unless the CPM accepted its conditions.

The conditions included that the party, which had won a particular seat in the last elections would contest the respective seat and wherever the Left Front candidates had lost, the party, which bagged the polled the second highest number of votes would contest this time. The RSP said the strength of a party in a panchayat would be the sole determining factor in the seat adjustment arrangement.

Senior RSP leaders including jail and social welfare minister Biswanath Chowdhury came down on the CPM-led government at the conference. Despite being a member of the state cabinet, he criticised the state government for toeing the Centre’s line.
