The driver of a Scorpio that hit a senior citizen at the Baghajatin crossing on Monday and whose occupants allegedly assaulted the 63-year-old jeweller and his son was arrested early on Wednesday.

Surya Adhikari, a resident of the Garfa area, has been booked for rash and negligent driving and assault. The side rear-view mirror of the Scorpio had dashed against Shanti Karmakar.

The vehicle has been seized by the Jadavpur police but the cops are yet to confirm its ownership and who were inside the car at the time of the accident. It had been alleged that Trinamul councillor Tarakeswar Chakraborty was in the car.

“I use that car. It belongs to the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. But I will not comment whether I was present on the spot or not. Police are investigating,” the councillor of ward 104 told Metro.

Shanti and his elder son Soumen were on the way home to Jorabagan from their Gariahat shop when the accident occurred. He fell down under the impact.

“When my elder brother protested, six-seven persons came out of the vehicle and attacked them with lathis, hockey sticks and rods,” said Shanti’s younger son Sourabh, a lawyer. He reached the spot later.

Shanti was released from hospital on Wednesday.
