The Calcutta University vice-chancellor has submitted a report to the governor about Manisha Mukherjee, a history lecturer who had gone missing 15 years ago.

Governor M.K. Narayanan, also chancellor of the university, had sought details of Mukherjee’s service records.

“The chancellor had sought details of the office records of Manisha Mukherjee. I have compiled the details and submitted the report to the governor on Monday,” said vice-chancellor Suranjan Das.

Mukherjee, who lived in the Hemchhaya apartment block in Ballygunge, was appointed as assistant controller of examinations of the university on April 10, 1993.

After three years, she applied for the post of lectureship in ancient Indian history and culture. The university’s syndicate approved the application on July 7, 1996.

Mukherjee joined as a lecturer in ancient Indian history and culture on September 20, 1996. She went missing the next day.

“Mukhejee last attended the university on September 20. In our records, she has been missing since September 21,” said a university official.

Insiders said some of the documents related to Mukherjee were missing and her dues lying unclaimed.

Mukherjee’s family members had alleged that some influential political leaders were behind her disappearance. There were also rumours about her rapport with some senior CPM leaders and that she had been “under pressure” for daring to “disobey” them.

The city police were investigating the case, which had to be closed because of lack of evidence.
