The Bicentenary Flower Show & World Regional Rose Convention 2020 was held from January 9 to 12

The Agri Horticultural Society of India celebrated its 200th anniversary with a spectacular flower show at its gardens. The Bicentenary Flower Show & World Regional Rose Convention 2020 in association with The Telegraph was held in partnership with the Bengal Rose Society, supported by the Indian Rose Federation. The flower exhibition was held from January 9 to 12, and had over 250 variety of roses on display.
“The response was very positive this year. This the third time the World Federation of Rose Societies Regional Convention is being held in India, and it’s the first time in Calcutta. More than 250 Indian and foreign delegates had come down for the convention and it was quite successful,” said Col. Pratul Pandit (retd.),CEO of The Agri Horticultural Society of India.

Shanti: A very delicate flower, the Shanti variety has to be nurtured very carefully as it is sensitive to improper sunlight, water and soil. An Indian breed, the Shanti has a beautiful soft yellow colour.

St. Patrick rose: The flowers open slowly to reveal satiny-yellow petals. The rose is mostly used for cut-flower purposes.

Ingrid Bergman: The classic red rose, the Ingrid Bergman is named after the great Hollywood actress. One of the most popular varieties, the flower is known for its signature bright red hue.

Bindubasini Indian Floribunda: The Floribunda variety offers a cluster of small flowers per stem. The Bindubasini, an Indian Floribunda variety, has a cluster of small pink flowers with a white centre.

“My husband loves gardening so I had come here earlier with him. The rose presentation is lovely and definitely my favourite!” said Souma Paul.

Palden Tshering was busy clicking pictures of his golf kit beside the roses when we caught up with him. “Oh, I was playing golf nearby and came directly for the flower show after that, with my wife and father. I am loving the flower display this year, it’s really wonderful,” he said.

“I have come here twice before my marriage, and this is the first time with my wife. My favourites are the yellow and peach roses,’ said Santanu Biswas with wife Supriya Mazumdar.
