College Street: Presidency University students holding a sit-in on the campus since Friday afternoon said on Sunday that they would continue the agitation till they were allowed to move into the renovated Eden Hindu Hostel.

More than 50 students, who have been accommodated in a hostel in Tarulia, New Town, instead of Hindu Hostel across the street from the College Street institution, spread their bedding in the first-floor corridor of the university building and were sleeping there at night.

The students said they have been buoyed by the success of the hunger strike in favour of hostel seat allocation at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital recently.

Presidency University provides buses to and from the New Town hostel, but the students complained that the commute takes a hour and a half each way. "The nearest bus stop is 2km away. So is the nearest chemist shop. When one of our friends fell ill at night last year, we had to take him to hospital in a police vehicle," said Subhra Biswas, a first-year postgraduate student of physics.

"The vice-chancellor (Anuradha Lohia) had promised that the repairs would be completed within 11 months. That was back in 2015. Since 2016, every time we have demanded that we be allowed to move back we have been told that repairs would take some more time," Biswas said.

The students have also alleged that they are forced to buy water to drink in the absence of clean water.

Samrat Mondal, a postgraduate second-year student of history, said Lohia had issued a written statement in February, promising to complete renovation by July 15. Students were to move in by August 1.

"We have been to Hindu Hostel recently. Only some toilet fittings and drinking water supply remain to be installed in wards one and two. That can be done in a matter of days," Mondal said.

Metro tried to contact VC Lohia but she did not answer calls or respond to messages.
