Jalpaiguri, Nov. 16: Special creations by special children like Rishta Begum, Munna Bhagat or Kalachand Sarkar could soon grace postal stamps.
John Samuel, the postmaster-general of north Bengal and Sikkim, has chosen eight sketches ? ranging from landscapes to scenes of nature and hamlets ? that he said he would recommend to be used as the background of the stamps.
The sketches, 160 of them, were created by physically-challenged children aged between four and 10 from Siliguri and Jalpaiguri at a sit-and-draw contest organised by Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Private Limited at its Raninagar plant on Children?s Day.
The best sketches were handed over to Samuel, who was present at the competition. ?The creativity displayed by the youngsters is amazing. I will take these pictures to Delhi and recommend that they be published as postal stamps,? he said.
Moloy Chatterjee, an executive (human resources) of the plant, said: ?Seven welfare organisations that work with these children in Siliguri and Jalpaiguri had sent their students to participate in the sit-and draw contest. The response we got was overwhelming. Some 160 children took part in the competition.?
?We will continue to work towards the betterment of physically-challenged children,? he added.
Other administrative officials, too, emphasised on private sector participation in catering to the social responsibility.
The postmaster-general echoed the officials and organisers and said his department would continue to work with multinational companies in future.
