Asian Games gold medallist Pinki Pramanik on Thursday denied the gender fraud and other accusations levelled at her in the 204-page chargesheet drawn up by police.

A woman Pinki had been living with for three years had lodged a complaint on June 13 accusing the athlete of repeatedly raping her. The 27-year-old runner was arrested the next day, kept in jail custody for 26 days and made to undergo gender tests.

“I have not yet received a copy of the chargesheet, but I can say with conviction that I am a woman. I have known this from my childhood,” Pinki said. She also spoke about the “anguish” she felt because of the contents of the chargesheet, which was submitted at the Barasat chief judicial magistrate’s court on Monday, becoming public.

“The spread of misinformation about my gender has caused me immense hurt,” said Pinki.

The chargesheet refers to Pinki as a man on the basis of medical reports and indicts her for rape, gender fraud, assault, cheating and intimidating her live-in partner.

“I did not cheat to win the medals. I worked hard to win them for the country,” said the runner, who had won a gold in the 2006 Doha Asiad.

She accused officers of Baguiati police station of “torturing” her and trying to drive her “to suicide”. “I don’t know what they have against me and why they are trying to frame me,” she said.

Pinki has decided to meet chief minister Mamata Banerjee and apprise her of the “injustice” being meted out to her. “I have sought an appointment with her. I want her to know the truth. I have my doubts if she is being given the right information about me.”

Pinki’s lawyer said they would decide on the course of action once they receive a copy of the chargesheet on November 26.

“We need to know on what basis the medical team declared Pinki a man. The medical report submitted along with the chargesheet holds the key. After going through it, we will decide on approaching a higher court,” said Pinki’s lawyer.

If proven guilty, Pinki might be imprisoned for up to 10 years.
