A man riding pillion on a motorcycle on Parama flyover was flung off the bike and landed on the road underneath — around 35ft below — after the two-wheeler rammed into a guard rail lined along the parapet of the overbridge on Wednesday evening.

He was declared dead at the SSKM hospital, while the motorcyclist who fell on the flyover, survived with fractures on his face and leg.

The incident happened around 8.10pm on the city-bound flank of the flyover at the junction of Parama flyover and the AJC Bose ramp.

“The cause of the accident is still not clear. Either the bike lost control and hit the parapet with high speed or it was a mechanical fault. It will be clear only after conducting the mechanical examination of the motorcycle,” said an officer of the traffic department. The motorcycle had taken the flyover from the side of Science City and was heading towards AJC Bose Road flyover.

Police identified him as Joydeb Hazra, 33, a reident of Barik Para Road in Behala.

He had landed in front of a restaurant named The Awadh Restaurant.

Rafi Ahmed, a waiter of the restaurant, said he and his colleagues heard a loud noise and they had rushed out to find a man lying outside in a pool of blood.

“The helmet was lying nearby. It had cracked. The man was barely breathing,” Ahmed said.

The maximum speed limit on Parama flyover is 60kmp. However, sources said, many vehicles tend to speed up on stretches in between two speed-cameras that capture the speed of the vehicles. To control reckless driving of two-wheelers at night, all the flyovers across the city are closed to motorcycles between 10pm and 6am everyday. Hundreds of speed prosecutions are reported from the flyover every month.

An officer of the traffic department said, it was apparent that the bike was moving at a high speed that resulted in his fall off the flyover.

A few weeks ago, an almost similar incident was reported at the Garden Reach flyover where three youths who were riding a single bike had flung off the flyover and landed below as a result of reckless driving.
