Calcutta, July 28: Veteran Congress leader Phulrenu Guha died today following protracted illness. She was 94.

Guha, who was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1964, was a minister of state for social welfare in Indira Gandhi’s 1970 cabinet. She was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984.

The widow of scientist Biresh Guha donated her house on Purna Das Road in south Calcutta to Calcutta University’s biochemistry department. She leaves behind her two sisters and nephews.

Once close to Gandhiji, Guha committed herself to vari-ous social welfare activities, particularly rehabilitation of destitute women and children.
