Siliguri, April 22: North Bengal University has formed an eight-member committee to frame the syllabi for post-graduate courses that will be offered on the Jalpaiguri campus from July this year.
The panel will also put in place the infrastructure needed to admit students to courses that will be taught on the NBU’s second campus.
Officials said the Jalpaiguri campus development committee was formed last week.
“We have formed an umbrella committee that comprises experts from different academic departments, the estate officer (of NBU), an official from the varsity’s engineering department, the registrar and a finance officer (of the university). It was necessary to form this committee because only two months are left, and we have to prepare a lot of things like adequate infrastructure and syllabus for students,” said a varsity official.
The state planning board had sanctioned Rs 47.71 crore in February for the new campus at Jalpaiguri.
The institution that will come up on a 33-acre plot on the Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College campus will offer two-year postgraduate courses in English, Bengali, geography and performing arts. The NBU campus in Shiv Mandir near here offers PG courses in English, Bengali and geography.
“We have to first formulate the syllabus for students and come up with a book list. Four members of the committee from different academic departments have been assigned with the job of preparing a comprehensive curriculum. The academicians will prepare a draft syllabus for the four subjects in the next two months. Syllabus and book list will be issued for the students only after an approval from the EC (executive council),” the official said.
Vishnu Prasad Dwivedi, the registrar (officiating) of NBU, said the first meeting of the eight-member committee would be held tomorrow “Its first meeting will take place on Tuesday.”
According to the officials, till the new campus is ready, the postgraduate classes would be held in a vacant building of the engineering college.
“It is not possible to construct the new building at such short time. So, we will take a building of the JGEC (Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College) on lease for holding classes and running administration until our own building comes up. The EC is yet to decide on the number of students to be admitted to each course. Furniture and teaching material would be purchased later,” said the official.
