Calcutta, May 19: Former police commissioner of Calcutta and inspector-general of the state force, Ranjit Kumar Gupta, died this morning. He was 93.

Gupta joined the Indian Police in 1942 and became police commissioner in 1968. As commissioner, he played a crucial role in tackling the Naxalite movement.

His family said he died of natural causes because of old age.
