If you thought Sector V was a concrete jungle, “Silver Moon” will set the record straight. Anandamay Adak has built a house there that breaks the monotony of office buildings and his terrace garden breathes fresh air into the surroundings. From Sunflowers and Roses and Zinias to Milis, the pretty petals greet the office-going crowd that rushes past.
I have always had a picture of an ideal home in my mind and when we started building this house, Silver Moon, a few years ago, I made sure every box got ticked.
The most important criterion was for the house to have a terrace garden. Since I had heard that the terrace floor gets damaged if heavy pots are placed on it, I created flowerbeds along the edges of the terrace. We dug trenches
there at a raised level and now most of my flowers are planted in them.
I could have grown fruits, vegetables and foliage, but I have such a soft corner for flowers that I have dedicated every inch of space to them. And I do not have the heart to pluck them, even to offer in puja, so despite having a full-fledged garden I still go Baisakhi market to buy flowers.
One gets the highest yield of flowers in winter, that too with the least amount of toil, but I make sure my garden has some colour every season. At present I have Sunflowers, Hibiscus and Bougainvillea.
It’s my dream to someday seat my family and friends in the garden and play the violin for them on a moonlit night. The flowers are ready and I too have started learning the violin. There is just some landscape work left in the garden and then it’ll be perfect.
