What's in store: A colourful yet poignant musical, Pocahontas, staged by the students of St. Thomas' Day School.
In this time of war and conflict, the school hopes the musical will strike a chord in each and every heart.
The animated film is a saga of the romance between a young American Indian woman, Pocahontas, and Captain John Smith and their journey to the New World with other settlers to begin life anew. However, destiny has a cruel conspiracy in store.
"This is a first attempt by our school to stage a musical and we are expecting a healthy audience. I don't think that this tale has been staged by any school in the city, so the challenge for us builds up. Through Pocahontas, we want to spread the message of futility of war and the need for peace. Children are very sensitive these days and issues like war should be discussed with them through plays and stories," said Aniket Deb Roy, principal, St. Thomas' Day School.
Around 80 kids from classes VII-XII have been assigned different roles in the play. Ex-student Harshvardhan Bhan is excited to be part of the show.
"Since I am a performing artiste and a choreographer, Principal sir contacted me for the role of John Smith. The play was conceptualised around three months ago, but preparations started in full swing about a month back. The play shows the native American culture as well as the English one, so teachers have stitched costumes dating back to the period," he said.
Live music will add to the magic, with the school choir singing a number of songs.
