Trinamul MP and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee on Friday said every vote for Narendra Modi meant a vote for Pakistan.

“We all know the main enemy of our country is Pakistan. In 2014, Narendra Modi became Prime Minister and invited then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to his swearing-in. Later, he had biryani at Sharif’s residence in Pakistan,” Abhishek said.

The Diamond Harbour MP was speaking at a rally for Trinamul Birbhum nominee Satabdi Roy in Nalhati. “Now Imran Khan is saying he wants Narendra Modi as Prime Minister…,which clearly means each vote for the BJP means a vote for Pakistan,” Abhishek said. He appeared to be playing on the BJP’s oft-cited campaign rhetoric that every vote for the national Opposition meant a vote for Pakistan.

Pakistani Prime Minister Khan was recently quoted as saying that another BJP-led government would be more conducive to the resolution of the Kashmir impasse.

“It is the first time we have heard an attack on the BJP with a weapon they (the BJP) themselves are prone to using. The BJP is trying to swing young voters by referring to the Balakot (air) strikes and the armed forces. Abhishek’s move will make them think twice,” said a Trinamul leader.
