CALCUTTA: Relatives of a patient who died at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Sunday have lodged a complaint of medical negligence with Bowbazar police station. The family members of Sanjib Roy Chowdhury, 52, from Girish Park alleged that he had been advised admission after an examination in the out patient section of the cardiology department on November 13. Roy Chowdhury was admitted to the medicine department the same day as no beds were available in the cardiology department. The family members alleged that no doctor visited him. The hospital authorities, however, claimed that cardiologists visited him twice every day.

Three injured

MAIDAN: Three men riding a scooter were injured when a car dashed the two-wheeler while trying to overtake it in front of Birla planetarium early on Sunday. The accident took place around 1am when Suraj Singh was driving the scooter along the Queen's Way with pillion riders Amit Shaw and Rohit Sarkar, police said. The three were treated at SSKM Hospital.

Train service

HOWRAH: The 12311 Up Howrah-Delhi Kalka Mail that was scheduled to leave Howrah at 7.40pm on Sunday will now leave at 8.35am on Monday because of the delay in the schedule of the corresponding Down train.

Theft cuffs on trio

NAIHATI: Three men were arrested from Naihati in North 24-Parganas and Nadia early on Sunday for stealing motorcycles. Amarjit Yadav was picked from Naihati on the basis of a specific tip-off, police said. A raid was conducted at Kalinarayanpur in Ranaghat, Nadia, after questioning him. Two more men, Sourav Mondal and Subrata Biswas, were arrested. The police have recovered four stolen two-wheelers.

Actress Rita Koiral dead

Calcutta: Actress Rita Koiral, who had acted in films such as Rituparno Ghosh's Asukh and Anjan Dutt's Dutta Vs Dutta, passed away on Sunday. She had been suffering for some time. "Saddened to hear about the passing away of actress Rita Koiral. My condolences to her family, friends and fans. Gone too soon," tweeted chief minister Mamata Banerjee. A pall of gloom descended on the film industry. "Really shocked and extremely upset to hear about the sudden demise of Rita Koyral. Loss for the industry. Such a powerful actress she was," tweeted Tolly star Prosenjit.

Cabbie summoned

Ballygunge: A taxi driver who had allegedly abused and threatened a passenger with assault on Saturday was on Sunday contacted by police and called to Ballygunge police station, along with the owner of the cab. Police said the passenger had lodged a complaint after he was threatened and abused. Mudar Patherya, the passenger, had stopped a taxi on Syed Amir Ali Avenue on and got into the vehicle, asking the driver to go to Menoka cinema. The driver refused to go. When Patherya would not get off the taxi, the driver came out and threatened him.

Accident

New town: A minitruck toppled on its side in Action Area III of New Town on Sunday . Both the driver and the helper of the vehicle escaped with minor injuries.

Cellphone stolen

Dalhousie: A woman's cellphone was allegedly stolen from her bag while she was travelling in a bus on Saturday afternoon. Jaya Pyne filed a complaint with Hare Street police station, saying she found the zip of her handbag open after getting off the bus at Dalhousie. On scanning the bag, she realised that her mobile phone was missing.

Hospital ransacked

Dum dum: The Dum Dum municipal hospital was ransacked by a mob after the death of a patient on Saturday night, alleging medical negligence. Police had to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

Blackmail arrest

HOWRAH: A man accused of blackmailing a woman he had befriended on Facebook was arrested in Ghaziabad on Sunday. Manoj Sharma and the complainant had known each other for over a year, police said. They would exchange pictures and video chat regularly until the woman, who lives in Howrah, decided to end all contact with him. Sharma allegedly threatened to circulate her private pictures if he was not paid Rs 5 lakh.

Baby body

BELUR: The body of a newborn baby was found in a water body in Belur on Sunday.
