A division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj of the high court on Tuesday rejected a plea for CBI probe into the Maynaguri molestation-and-suicide, asking state police to continue the job.

After a minor died of burns on April 25 after setting herself ablaze over alleged threats by her molester, her family sought a CBI probe. On May 5, her father told the high court that he was satisfied with the state police probe and did not want a CBI probe. On Tuesday, petitioner Sushmita Saha Datta, who moved a PIL, said “some people affiliated to the ruling party had forced the father to put his thumb impression on white paper”. The advocate-general said the state police probe was moving in the right direction and the culprit was arrested. The court ordered the state police to continue the probe, and the DIG of Jalpaiguri to monitor it and file a report on June 20.

Suvendu request

The counsel of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday sought a nod from the high court to move a writ petition against state police for raiding his home and office without a search warrant. The plea was granted.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha granted the prayer and asked Suvendu’s counsel to file the writ before the appropriate section of the court. The petition was filed before the filing section of the court on Tuesday. It is likely to be heard by Justice Mantha on Thursday.
