Belur, Aug. 17: Mamata Banerjee today toured the Belur Math with senior officials, apparently as part of a plan to develop a Calcutta-Dakshineswar-Belur tourism circuit.

She spent more than two hours at the Math and spoke to senior monks.

Swami Subirananda, assistant secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, said: “She wanted to have bhog and spend some time at the Math. That is why she came. She also met the president, Swami Atmasthananda.”

A Mamata aide said: “She plans to develop a Calcutta-Dakshineswar-Belur tourism circuit.”

The chief secretary and the home secretary accompanied Mamata. So did director-general of police Naparajit Mukherjee and the police commissioners of Calcutta and Howrah, Surajit Kar Purkayastha and Ajey Ranade.

Senior monks could not recall the last time a chief minister and so many top officials had visited the Math together.

According to a source, Mamata planned to improve the condition of the potholed Grand Trunk Road, which she had taken to reach the Math. The monks are unhappy with the road, the source said.

Mamata is also considering a ferry service connecting Dakshineswar and Belur Math, which are on different banks of the Hooghly, with Calcutta, sources said.

The chief minister enquired about the progress of the probe into the theft of a tooth, strands of hair and a rudraksha rosary belonging to Sarada Devi from the Belur Math museum. The CID and Howrah police are investigating the case.

Mamata spent some time in Swami Vivekananda’s room and the ghat. The Math gifted her a sari and a shawl.
