The BJP and the CPM went after chief minister Mamata Banerjee as she called out the Union government for hurting Bengal’s economy and accused the erstwhile Left Front government of corruption in her speech at the Martyrs’ Day rally in Calcutta on Thursday.

Reacting to the Trinamul supremo’s allegation against the Narendra Modi government and his party, BJP’s Bengal chief Sukanta Majumdar described Mamata as a pathological liar. He said the tall claims made by Mamata in her speech, in which she tried to paint a rosy picture of the state, was hardly true.He claimed Mamata had used words “ED”, “CBI” and “fear” more than 100 times in her speech.

“You can count yourself. This proves that she is actually afraid of the ED and the CBI. Only those who are afraid try to put up a brave face,” Majumdar said.Replying to Mamata’s question that why the state can’t run schemes in its own name, Majumdar has said that there is nothing called a state-run scheme.

“The money comes from the Centre and the decision on which state would get how much is made in Parliament…. Bengal government has no money of its own.,” the Balurghat MP said.He added that Trianmul workers were laughing at Mamata’s suggestion that the BJP would not emerge as the single-largest party in the 2024 polls. “She has several wishes. She wants to go to the moon and also to become the next Prime Minister of the country,” Majumdar said.

As Mamata alleged that the Left Front-run Calcutta Municipal Corporation had indulged in illegal distribution of birth certificates, the then mayor, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, challenged the chief minister to form a one-man inquiry commission headed by her to investigate the matter.

“Let that committee submit a report to the public within 15 days. I’ll treat her with a pot of rasogolla if she can do this,” Bhattacharya said. “If she cannot, she must resign...,” said Bhattacharya who is the lone CPM MP from the state.Mamata, in her speech, had accused Bhattacharya of creating hindrance in giving employment in Bengal.

Bhattacharya, an advocate, has been fighting litigations filed by several jobseekers who have alleged corruption in the recruitment for government jobs in schools and other departments by the Trinamul Congress regime.Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused the Trinamul Congress of turning the July 21 Martyrs’ Day into a day of celebrations.“Thirteen young men had died that day while fighting for voting rights and today Mamata Banerjee is preventing people from casting their votes. There is an unholy conspiracy between Modi and Didi. The people of Bengal are watching,” said Chowdhury.
