The special task force (STF) of Bengal police arrested an alleged trained militant of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) here on Friday.

According to STF sources, Tapas Roy, 27, from Kumargram in Alipurduar, is a trained militant with links to a KLO faction.

Last year, Jibon Singha, the self-styled KLO chief, responded to the proposal for peace talks from the Centre and the BJP government of Assam, and reached Assam from Myanmar. A section of the outfit, however, floated the KLO-KN faction against peace talks.

“Many from Bengal and Assam associated with the KLO-KN are staying in Bangladesh. We have specific information that Tapas has strong links with them. He returned to Bengal some weeks back and was trying to collect money from businessmen for the outfit,” said an officer of the STF.

Tapan, he said, and some others headed for KLO’s camp in Myanmar in 2022.

“They contacted NSCN (a Nagaland-based terror group) to reach Jibon Singha’s place. Because of some deterrents, they stayed at the NSCN’s camp and trained there. Nagaland police arrested him and handed him over to Assam police. He spent three months at the Kokrajhar jail and was released on bail,” the officer added.
