The state JEE board will soon start an academic audit to identify the questions in the engineering entrance test in which students scored more and the ones in which they did not.
The audit, a prelude to an exercise to revamp the JEE system, will help enable the authorities to give more emphasis to the types of questions that fetch good scores, board chairman Bhaskar Gupta said.
“After analysing the audit report we will bring about necessary changes to the examination system and question pattern,” said Gupta.
The state Higher Secondary syllabus has undergone a thorough change and the first batch of students under the new syllabus will write the HS next year.
“The audit will cover JEE (engineering). JEE (medical) can be included in the exercise only after the Medical Council of India’s nod,” said a board source.
The audit team will scan JEE answer papers of the last three years.
In JEE, questions test students’ logical aptitude, mathematical ability, skill to analyse graphical data and ability to memorise. “We would want to know how the students are coping with the existing format of questions,” said Gupta.
The audit is going to start this month and is expected to be completed in six months.
The board will engage Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) to conduct the audit.
The JEE syllabus and examination system were last overhauled in 2006.
“A restructuring of the JEE syllabus and examination system is long overdue and the IISER will be requested to complete the academic audit in less than six months so that we can implement the revised system by next year,” said a board official.
The JEE board has already started the process of revising the entire syllabus. “The revision is under way,” the official said.
The board has also decided to conduct a survey on the socio-economic condition of the students who enrol for the JEE and who are able to crack the test.
The survey will also cover the geographical location of the candidates. The board will engage the Indian Statistical Institute to conduct this survey.
