Calcutta, May 18: A group of workers at the Aditya Birla-owned Jayshree Textiles allegedly heckled one of the managers at a plant in Hooghly and attacked police with bricks demanding a hike in daily wages.

The workers of the plant in Rishra have been demanding a hike of Rs 6 over the daily wage of Rs 75.

The trouble started on May 16 when members of the workers' union distributed pamphlets among the labourers, leading to a strike.

"Today, the workers blocked the gate and stopped manager Ranjan Banerjee from entering the premises. They gheraoed his car and tried to overturn the vehicle. Banerjee managed to come out but he was pushed around," said an officer of Rishra police station.

Jayshree said in a statement that the company had seen an almost 50 per cent decline in profits over the past few years because of severe competition, global recession and high overhead costs.

"In such conditions, it would have been difficult to even consider any wage hike especially when the current long term settlement in wages signed in July 2015 is in vogue till July 2018," the statement said.
