An IT employee has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined Rs 26,000 for creating fake social media accounts of a colleague and posting objectionable photos.

On April 2, 2018, a 26-year-old woman had lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar cyber crime police station accusing one of her colleagues in Sector V of creating fake accounts in her name and posting “obscene and compromising” photographs.

The man was arrested within days and has since been in custody.

The Salt Lake cyber crime court’s ruling on Friday means the man can be released from jail in two months.

“The man made posts asking viewers to pay through digital wallets to get more such photographs,” she had said in her complaint. She had a brief relationship with him and they used to chat via video calls, she had said.

“They fell out when the woman insisted on marriage,” Bibhas Chatterjee, special public prosecutor handling cyber crime cases, said.

The man then created the fake accounts and started blackmailing the woman, the lawyer said.

“The situation compelled me to leave my job,” the woman had said in her complaint.

Calcutta High Court had rejected his bail plea.

On Friday, additional chief judicial magistrate E. Lepcha pronounced the verdict. Sources close to the woman said she was not happy with the quantum of punishment.

The man had been charged with various IPC sections and 66C (identity theft) and 67A (transmitting and publishing materials containing sexually explicit act) of the IT act.
