Howrah, Dec. 6: Hanuman Jute Mill in Howrah, which employs 3,500 workers, declared suspension of work today citing a shortage of cash in the wake of demonetisation.

According to the management of the mill, located at Howrah's JN Mukherjee Road, operations were suspended for an indefinite period because of failure to arrange for the cash required to pay the wages.

Payments are made to the mill workers on the 10th and 25th of every month. Since the demonetisation announcement on November 8, the mill authorities have not been able to pay the wages.

"We had told the labourers to submit photocopies of their bank account details to our office so that the wages could be transferred. But it emerged that around 250 workers did not have accounts. Those without bank accounts had been demonstrating at the mill every day, disrupting production. So, we decided to suspend work for an indefinite period," a mill official said.
