July 7: Police arrested an employee of a New Town hotel today on the charge of raping an intern.

Cops picked up Suman Dutta, 33, from his home in Belghoria based on a 25-year-old woman’s complaint with the women’s police station in Sector V.

The woman, a hotel management student, was interning at the hotel in New Town for more than a month, the police said.

She said in her complaint that her ordeal started three days after she had joined the hotel, the police said.

The woman alleged that Dutta had raped her on multiple occasions inside one of rooms in the hotel, an officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

“Every time he raped her, the man threatened her into silence by saying he would tell her friends and family about the rape,” the officer said.

The woman confided in her parents and filed the complaint on Wednesday.

“A team went to Dutta’s house and arrested him. He has confessed to the crime,” Santosh Pandey, deputy commissioner, detective department, Bidhannagar commissionerate, said.

An officer said investigations were on to find out how he managed to rape the woman in empty rooms without anyone getting to know of it.

The CCTV footage will be checked, he said.

A hotel official said he couldn’t say anything about the matter.

Dutta has been booked under various IPC sections, including 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation). He will be produced in a Salt Lake court tomorrow.

The charges carry a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail and/or fine.
