A social organisation on Saturday took several Santipur State General Hospital doctors to brick kilns and villages affected by the Nrisinhapur hooch tragedy to spread awareness about the harm caused by spurious liquor.

The awareness initiative by Nabajagaran, a Santipur-based social organisation, was part of its drive against hooch.

The doctors told the villagers about the 12 fatalities since Thursday and the unbearable pain faced by the victims.

Sibaji Kar, a doctor who treated the hooch victims and also led the medical team to the affected Nrisinhapur and Choudhurypara areas, said he advised the villagers to try to come out of addiction for the sake of their families.

The doctors said the immediate symptoms that eventually lead to death if left untreated were drowsiness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain and vertigo. They said the patients would also start hyperventilating and feel breathless.
