Uluberia: Two people were killed and 14 injured in pile-ups on NH6 in Howrah's Uluberia between Thursday night and Friday evening.
On Friday, a woman was killed and six people were injured when a Maruti van headed towards Calcutta hit a Matador and a bike that was behind the van rammed into it, police said.
Five people, including the woman, were returning home to Basirhat in North 24-Parganas from Digha when the accident occurred around 4pm near Jamberia in Uluberia, the police said.
The five and the biker and his pillion passenger were taken to Uluberia Sub-divisional Hospital where the woman was declared dead.
"Witnesses told us that the Maruti driver overtook a truck from the left and a Matador in front suddenly braked to avert a collision with another vehicle," an officer of Uluberia police station said.
"The Maruti van hit the Matador and a biker rammed into the van. The biker and his pillion passenger were flung in the air on impact."
People of the area took everyone to the hospital, the officer said.
The police have seized the Maruti van and the Matador. "Both vehicles will undergo mechanical tests to check for technical faults, if any, that might have led to the accident," the officer said.
On Thursday night, one person was killed and eight people were injured when a pickup hit a parked truck and two bikes rammed into it near Kadamtala, the police said.
Abhijit Bera, 32, was with two others in the pickup headed towards Shyampur from Salkia when the accident occurred.
The three, along with two bikers and their four pillion passengers, were taken to Uluberia Sub-divisional Hospital where Bera was declared dead.
"The pickup driver said the accident occurred when he tried to overtake a truck from the left," an officer said. "He claimed the truck had swerved to the left, forcing him almost off the road and he rammed into the parked truck."
Bera, seated beside the driver in the pickup, suffered head injuries, the officer said.
The bikers, each with two pillion passengers, rammed into the pickup, he said. None of them had helmets at the time of the accident.
